Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

We are building a digital platform used by businesses to move money, reconcile transactions, and manage operational workflows. As our product and customer base grow, we are evolving a set of distributed backend services that support customer-facing APIs and internal operations. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a product engineering team and help us make those services reliable, observable, and easier to evolve.

This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone who enjoys writing production code and improving systems in operation. You will work closely with product engineers, infrastructure specialists, and product managers. You will contribute to technical direction and architecture discussions while remaining involved in day-to-day delivery.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, test, and operate backend services and APIs used by our products and internal teams.
  • Improve API reliability, failure handling, performance, and service-level visibility as transaction volumes grow.
  • Contribute to architecture decisions for distributed systems, data flows, integrations, and service boundaries.
  • Work with relational databases, including schema design, query performance, migrations, and production troubleshooting.
  • Review code and design proposals, share practical feedback, and help maintain sound engineering standards.
  • Partner with infrastructure colleagues on cloud infrastructure, deployment practices, observability, and operational readiness.
  • Participate in incident response, follow-up analysis, and improvements that reduce repeat failures.
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, code review, technical discussions, and constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with product managers and other engineers to break broad product goals into deliverable technical work.

What we're looking for

  • Strong professional backend development experience in systems used in production.
  • Substantial coding experience with Python or Java and willingness to work across an existing service estate.
  • Experience designing or operating distributed backend services, APIs, and asynchronous integrations.
  • Practical knowledge of relational databases and production data concerns.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and modern deployment practices.
  • A production engineering mindset, including attention to reliability, observability, testing, and maintainability.
  • Confidence contributing to architecture discussions and explaining technical trade-offs to different stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting other engineers through review, mentoring, or technical guidance.
  • Clear written and spoken English for collaboration in a distributed team.

Nice to have

  • Experience in fintech, payments, banking technology, or another transaction-heavy environment.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or comparable container-orchestration environments.
  • Experience improving on-call practices, incident learning, or service-level objectives.
  • Exposure to regulated products or systems where auditability and operational resilience matter.

Location and working model

This role can be hired remotely anywhere in Spain. The team works primarily remotely and meets in Barcelona for planning and collaboration approximately once per quarter. Candidates should be comfortable participating in scheduled incident-response coverage and occasional travel connected with those team sessions.

We welcome candidates whose experience is adjacent to parts of this description. The interview process will focus on evidence of production backend ownership, engineering judgment, learning, and collaboration rather than expecting one person to have used every tool in our environment.

Hiring-manager context

Must have production Python experience; Java-only profiles are outside the initial pool. Fintech experience is preferred, not mandatory. The person should code most of the time while owning architecture recommendations and mentoring two junior engineers; this is not a line-management role. Kubernetes would be useful, but it is not required. Remote anywhere in Spain is approved. Quarterly travel to Barcelona is expected. We would like the person to start within six weeks, but notice-period flexibility has not been agreed.

Prioritized discussion

Intake questions

  1. high
Should production Python replace the published Python-or-Java wording, and is Java-only experience a permanent exclusion or only an initial-search exclusion?

This resolves the main screening inconsistency.

  2. high
Must candidates already reside in Spain and have unrestricted work authorization, or are relocation and sponsorship available?

This defines the eligible geographic and employment pool.

  3. high
What compensation range and Spanish employment arrangement are approved?

These are essential for targeting and closing feasibility.

  4. high
What is the latest acceptable start date, and how much notice-period flexibility is available?

The six-week preference is currently unresolved and may sharply constrain the pool.

  5. high
What are the hours, frequency, rotation structure, response expectations, and compensation for incident coverage?

Candidates need a concrete understanding of the operational obligation.

  6. medium
What coding-versus-architecture-versus-mentoring split should recruiters describe, and who holds final architecture decision authority?

This clarifies the appropriate seniority and scope without implying line management.

  7. medium
What are the interview stages, assessments, owners, and target completion time?

A timely, role-aligned process is important given the desired start date.

  8. low
What are the duration, notice, and expense arrangements for quarterly travel to Barcelona?

This makes the travel commitment clear before outreach and closing.

Clarify

Ambiguities

The exact Spain-based eligibility requirement is undefined.

Sourcing differs depending on whether candidates must already reside and hold work authorization in Spain or whether relocation or sponsorship is available.

Ask: Must candidates already reside in Spain and have unrestricted Spanish work authorization, or are relocation and/or visa sponsorship available?

Explicit · Manager notesRemote anywhere in Spain is approved.

Scheduled incident-response coverage is not operationally defined.

Frequency, after-hours expectations, rotation size, and compensation can materially affect candidate eligibility and closing.

Ask: What are the incident-response rotation frequency, coverage hours, expected response time, and compensation or time-off arrangements?

Explicit · Job descriptionCandidates should be comfortable participating in scheduled incident-response coverage

The intended balance between coding, architecture, and mentoring is only described as coding 'most of the time.'

Candidates may interpret the role as either a conventional senior engineer or a staff-like technical lead, affecting level and profile targeting.

Ask: What approximate percentage of time should be spent coding versus architecture and mentoring, and is architecture authority limited to recommendations or does it include final decisions?

Explicit · Manager notesThe person should code most of the time while owning architecture recommendations and mentoring two junior engineers

The six-week start goal is not yet a firm eligibility rule.

Treating it as mandatory could exclude otherwise qualified candidates with common notice periods.

Ask: What is the latest acceptable start date, and which notice periods can be accommodated for a strong candidate?

Explicit · Manager notesWe would like the person to start within six weeks, but notice-period flexibility has not been agreed.

Potential tension

Expectations to align

The job description permits Python or Java, while the manager requires production Python and excludes Java-only profiles initially.

Published wording could attract Java-only applicants and cause inconsistent screening unless the language requirement is aligned.

Ask: Should the job description be revised to make production Python mandatory, and would Java-only candidates ever be considered if the initial search is unsuccessful?

Explicit · Job descriptionSubstantial coding experience with Python or Java and willingness to work across an existing service estate.
Explicit · Manager notesMust have production Python experience; Java-only profiles are outside the initial pool.

Before sourcing

Missing information

Compensation range and employment terms

Salary, equity or bonus, benefits, and employment arrangement materially affect targeting and closing feasibility.

Ask: What is the approved compensation range, including any variable or equity component, and will the person be hired as a Spanish employee or under another arrangement?

Quarterly Barcelona travel arrangements

Expected duration, notice, and expense coverage can affect candidate willingness and accessibility.

Ask: How long do quarterly Barcelona sessions usually last, how much notice is provided, and are all travel and accommodation expenses covered?

Interview stages and assessment

A defined process is needed to assess Python production ownership, systems judgment, and mentoring consistently and to support the desired start timeline.

Ask: What are the interview stages, decision owners, expected timeline, and assessment methods for Python, system design, production ownership, and mentoring?
